The holiday season is upon us; a time to be merry, and to enjoy the company of friends and family. It also happens to be the prime time for new movie releases– and there have been some good ones lately! But, the beautiful cinematography, intriguing narratives, and interesting characters, are not the only captivating elements of these films. Let’s not forget about the costume design! There are so many noteworthy fashion moments to draw inspiration from. And if you’re looking to spruce up your closet for the holiday season, look no further. Here are the top five looks from recent films to try:
Based on a true story, Loving explores the impenetrable love between Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple in Virginia during the late 1950s, as they face the trials and tribulations of a prejudice system against interracial marriage.
In terms of fashion, the 50’s are well-known for its calf-length, a-line dresses and fun prints. And as you can see, Mildred Loving is rocking just that with gingham and floral prints for a casual and comfortable look, and so can you! Inevitably, winter is here, but you can still incorporate the same a-line, calf-length and soft print elements into your fittings for those holiday parties this season.
Also based on a true story, Jackie follows the tragic event of President John F Kennedy’s assassination through the eyes of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. As she endures such agony, Jackie must find a way to heal and carry on her husband’s legacy.
It is without a doubt that Jackie’s outfits in the film embody the grace and elegance associated with being the First Lady. Tweed suits, pearls, white gloves, classic colors and minimal accessories are all the name of game for Jackie, and can be for you as well. Picking a couple of these elements to incorporate into your look will instantly add a sense of simplicity and class.
3. Miss Sloane
Miss Sloane tells the story of Elizabeth Sloane, a determined lobbyist in Washington D.C. who is dedicated to winning. She aims to pass gun control legislation at whatever price it will take, even if the stakes are high.
If you wish to dress in “boss-like” attire for this holiday season, Elizabeth Sloane’s style is the perfect source to draw some inspiration. Rock an all black look with a pop of polka-dots or perhaps an all-white look with pops of black leather for a sleek, monochromatic look. And just like Elizabeth, don’t be afraid to strut around with some sass!
4. Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them
After her iconic Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling is back with another magical story. Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them follows Newt Scamander’s (fantastic) adventures in the secret wizarding community based in New York City.
Even in a world of wizardry, it seems the flapper fashion is still very much relevant. And if you’re looking to sport a classic look, look no further! Sequin beads juxtaposed with chiffon is the perfect equation for holiday attire this season.
5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
The Star Wars saga continues to live on! The latest installment, Rogue One, narrates a risky mission led by The Rebellion to acquire the ultimate weapon of destruction, Death Star.
The featured looks in this film are perfectly suited for adventure-seeking individuals. If you consider yourself adventurous, then opt for a similar practical style sported by Jyn Erso. Incorporate the leather fingerless gloves, and utility vest too if you’re feeling it!
